Description
When the spirit of Jesus had vanished, the wife of the jailer, Nicostratus, immediately fell to her knees by Sebastian’s feet and began to gesture for him to let her become a Christian. In response, he made the sign of the cross over her head and told Zoe, “If I am a servant of Jesus and if all I’ve said be true, may the Lord Jesus heal thee and loose thy tongue and make thee speak.”
Immediately Zoe opened her mouth to find with joy that she was able to talk once more. Moved by his words and the miracle, Nicostratus and the family also asked to be baptized. The saint agreed, only if Nicostratus brought up all the other prisoners, from their cells, to be able to listen to Sebastian preach the Gospel.
After he had done so, all the prisoners gathered around him, wanting to be baptized by Saint Sebastian, as well. However, Sebastian sent for a priest, and close friend, named Polycarp, who came and baptized all sixty-four men and women.
