Description

Another bit of story art for my new and improved upcoming novel, The Addison Diary.
So during the time period where the story takes place (1910), Andre is a consumptive at a tuberculosis sanatorium. Therefore, he is not allowed to exert himself and required to rest. Of course this would become a boring experience after a while, so patients were given other ways to entertain themselves while they tried to recover. Each sanatorium had different methods of keeping their patients entertained...

For patients who could still walk or were allowed to move about more freely, they could stroll the grounds, do light exercise, play a relaxing sport (like croquet), perhaps participate in a billiard or pool game if the sanatorium had such an item. Other recreational activities for the ambulatory patients was being able to go to a recreational hall to see a motion picture, listen to a performance by a local group, or watch a play.

For patients who were on bed rest or too ill to leave their room, there are still ways to be entertained. Books were provided to read, phonographs/gramophones (as seen above) with records or cylinders were given to listen to music, board games offered a sense of fun along with picking up a hobby such as drawing or painting, crocheting/knitting, writing, or other activities which did not cause too much strain on their weakened bodies.

But of course, one of the best methods to keep the sanatorium patients happy was allowing family or friends come to visit. However, the visitors had to abide by certain rules when coming to see the patient...There could only be two persons at most beside the bed, and both had to sit on the same side. The guests had to remain a decent distance away from the person and refrain from close contact because tuberculosis is contagious. Also the visitors could not stay for long periods of time, this was because physicians thought that too many people around the consumptive for too long could put a strain on their body as well. However, despite these strict rules, sanatoriums encouraged family and friends to participate in the patient's recovery. If not by visiting, phone calls, telegrams, or letters were an excellent option to offer support.

Notes on the picture!

-The gramophone
(since the story takes place in the UK) is a Victor brand, hence the logo with "Nipper" the dog, hearing his master's voice on the base of the machine.
-The album on the floor is a tribute to the famous Haydn Quartet, a vocal group who traveled from the United States to the UK, performing and recording in music halls. The song, being played is called, "Put On Your Old Grey Bonnet." It can be listened to here --> www.youtube.com/watch?v=wH5X_s… The Haydn Quartet.
-The chair is a specially designed for sanatoriums and hospitals, and was a popular sight back in the early 1900s.
-The photograph next to the gramophone pertains more to The Addison Diary and is supposed to be a picture of Andre's wife, Marie Addison, who had passed away about a year prior to Andre being admitted to Shepherd Valley Sanatorium in January of 1909.
-The landscape in the distance represent the Highlands of Scotland where the sanatorium resides due to the climate, altitude, and distance from civilization.
